Panthers lose a great man

The Panthers were saddened yesterday by the passing of Darren Bell. Darren was the President of the club during some of the toughest times for Wests, both on and off the field. Darren is credited with single handedly keeping the Panthers alive during the early 2000's with his administration genius and his financial generosity. He was also instrumental in the reunification and ultimate survival of the club after the Panthers split into the Hills District and Western Suburbs sides.
Away from Wests, Darren and wife Jacqui helped foster many aspiring young country and Kiwi footballers through feeder competitions into the NRL. Talents such as Russell Bawden and Robert Tanielu were amongst the many players who flourished under Darren and Jacqui's care.
For the past four years, Darren served as Recruitment Manager for the Melbourne Storm ensuring a steady flow of talent was always available to coach Craig Bellamy.
All who knew him best talk about "Bellie" as a mate who gave to others before thinking of himself. Darren was 45 years of age and a great man lost far too early. The thoughts of all Panthers, past and present are now with Jacqui in this difficult time.
Darren's Memorial will be held next Friday the 30th December, 11am in The Chapel at Centenary Memorial Gardens, Corner of Wolsten and Wacol Station Roads, Sumner. Family and friends are invited to attend the service, followed by an opportunity to share stories and celebrate Darren's life at the Broncos Leagues Club, Red Hill.
